Stage 3 learning path

Trade basics here → deep dives: AutoCAD or Tally & GST. Stage 2 done? Course comparison.

Degree or trade? Vocational training teaches you to do the job in months. Use this guide to pick a category, then open the matching deep dive.

What is vocational training?

Vocational programs are job-oriented. You learn specific tasks — using Tally for accounts, styling hair, assisting in a clinic, managing social media for a shop, repairing devices, or serving customers in retail. Training includes:

Vocational vs degree: when to choose which

Choose vocational first if you need income within 6–12 months, prefer practical work, or want to test a career before committing to a long degree. Choose degree first if your target role legally requires it (some engineering, medical, law paths) or you want deep academic specialization.

Many successful professionals combine both over time — a vocational certificate for early employment, then degree or advanced certification while working.

Popular vocational categories in India

Computer & office

DCA, MS Office, Tally, typing, data entry — office and SME jobs

Accounts & billing

Tally with GST — traders, distributors, back-office. Full Tally guide →

Drafting & CAD

AutoCAD 2D — construction, interior, fabrication offices. Full AutoCAD guide →

Digital economy

Social media, basic SEO, content, Canva — local business support

Beauty & wellness

Salon, grooming, spa assistance — self-employment common

Healthcare support

Assistant roles — always verify scope vs nursing degrees

How long does training take?

Typical ranges:

Duration alone does not equal quality — check hours per week and assessment rigor.

What to look for in a training center

Green flags: published syllabus, working lab equipment, verifiable certificates, clear fee structure, exam before certification, physical address you can visit.

Red flags: certificate on day one, no assessment, only online ads without campus, guaranteed government job claims, pressure to pay cash without receipt.

Government schemes and vocational training

National initiatives like Skill India and PMKVY aim to expand access to short-term training. Not every center runs government-funded batches — ask specifically about scheme alignment, eligibility and assessment body. Read our PMKVY guide for details.

After you finish: first job strategy

  1. Prepare resume + verified certificate link
  2. Apply locally — SMEs often hire faster than large corporates
  3. Consider internship or apprenticeship for experience
  4. Plan one upskill within 12 months

See Career After Computer Courses for role examples. For drafting or accounts paths, read the Stage 3 deep dives linked above.

Trade selection worksheet

  1. Trade I am considering: _______________
  2. Hands-on or desk work? _______________
  3. Job ads in my town for this trade: Yes / No
  4. Training duration I can commit: _______________
  5. Deep-dive guide read: AutoCAD / Tally / Other / None yet

If job ads are “No” and you have not read a deep-dive guide, pause before paying fees.

FAQ

What is the difference between ITI and private vocational training?

ITIs are government institutes with fixed trades. Private authorized centers often offer flexible schedules and computer + service-sector mixes.

Do vocational courses guarantee a job?

No. Good programs teach skills and may offer referrals — you still interview and show up.
