- NCS (ncs.gov.in) is the government job portal for job search, job fairs, counselling and employer checks; the helpline is 1514.
- Register with your own mobile number and email, and note your NCS registration ID.
- A complete profile with specific skills and realistic locations is what makes employers find you.
- Check the Blacklisted Entities list and never pay anyone for a job.
- Log in regularly, apply quickly and update your profile after each new skill.
The National Career Service (NCS) portal at ncs.gov.in is the Government of India's job-matching platform, run by the Ministry of Labour and Employment. Job seekers can register once, build a profile, search jobs across India, join job fairs, find career counsellors and check whether an employer has been blacklisted. This guide explains how to register, what to keep ready, how to build a profile that employers actually find, and what to do when something goes wrong.
Government portals update their design from time to time, so button names and the order of screens may differ slightly from what is described here. The overall flow — register, verify your contact details, complete your profile, then search and apply — stays the same. The NCS toll-free helpline is 1514.
What you can do on NCS
| Service | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Job search | Search domestic jobs by keyword, location, sector and qualification. There are separate sections for government-sector jobs, jobs for persons with disabilities and jobs for ex-servicemen. |
| Job fairs and events | See upcoming job fairs (rozgar melas) in your district and register to attend. |
| Career counselling | Find counsellors and career centres, including Model Career Centres in many districts. |
| Skill providers | Find training providers if you need a skill before applying. |
| International jobs | Links to the e-Migrate system and advisories for people seeking jobs abroad. |
| Blacklisted entities | Check whether an employer or recruitment agency has been blacklisted before you deal with them. |
NCS also connects with the employment exchange system. If you registered at an employment exchange earlier, ask your local exchange or career centre how your old registration links to NCS.
Before you start: keep these ready
- A mobile number you personally use (you will receive OTPs on it).
- An email address you check regularly. Create one first if you do not have one — see our professional email guide.
- Basic personal details exactly as on your ID documents: full name, date of birth, gender, address with PIN code.
- An identity document number, if the form asks for one.
- Education details: board or university, year of passing, marks or grade for Class 10, Class 12 and any higher qualification.
- Skill certificates: course name, institute, duration and certificate number.
- Work experience, if any: employer, role, dates.
- A resume saved as PDF and a clear passport-size photo, in case the portal lets you upload them.
Avoid letting a cyber café or agent register you using their phone number or email. You will lose access to OTPs and alerts. Never share your OTP or password with anyone who calls claiming to be from NCS or an employer.
Step-by-step registration
- Open the official site. Type
www.ncs.gov.indirectly in your browser. Check the address carefully; do not use links from unknown messages. - Choose the job seeker option. From the menu, go to the Jobseekers section and select Register. The portal also offers a registration flowchart you can view first.
- Fill in basic details. Enter your name, date of birth, gender, mobile number and email exactly as on your documents. Spelling mismatches cause problems later.
- Verify with OTP. Enter the OTP sent to your mobile (and email, if asked). If it does not arrive, wait a minute before requesting again.
- Create login credentials. Choose a strong password you can remember — a mix of letters, numbers and a symbol. Write it somewhere safe at home, not in your phone gallery.
- Complete registration and note your ID. After submission, the portal generates an NCS registration ID. Write it down or take a screenshot.
- Log in and complete your profile. Registration is only the first part. Your profile — education, skills, experience and preferences — is what employers search.
Building a profile employers can find
Employers search NCS using filters such as location, qualification, skills and experience. A half-filled profile simply does not show up. Fill every section that applies to you.
| Section | Weak entry | Strong entry |
|---|---|---|
| Education | "12th pass" | Class 12, State Board, 2025, Commerce, with percentage |
| Skills | "Computer" | MS Excel (SUMIF, VLOOKUP), MS Word, typing 35 wpm, Tally Prime with GST |
| Certificates | Blank | Course name, institute, duration, certificate number |
| Preferred location | Only one big city | Home district plus one or two nearby towns you can travel to |
| Preferred role | "Any job" | Data entry operator, office assistant, accounts assistant |
Profile tips
- List skills using the words employers use in job ads. Read five ads for your target role and copy their skill words where they are true for you.
- Choose realistic locations. Many local employers hire people who live nearby because they are more likely to stay.
- Upload a simple, one-page resume if the portal allows. Our fresher resume guide has a format.
- Update your profile whenever you finish a course or gain experience. Updated profiles look active.
Sample profile summary
If the portal gives you a space for a summary or "about me", keep it to three or four factual lines. Here is an example you can adapt (the details are fictional):
Class 12 (Commerce) graduate from Karimnagar with a 3-month certificate
in Tally with GST. Comfortable with MS Excel (SUMIF, VLOOKUP), MS Word
and email. Typing speed 35 words per minute. Looking for an accounts
assistant or office assistant role in Karimnagar or nearby towns.
Avoid empty phrases like "hard-working and dynamic". Specific skills and a clear target role help an employer decide quickly.
Searching and applying for jobs
- Log in and open the job search section.
- Enter a keyword (for example "data entry" or "tailor") and choose your state and district.
- Use filters for qualification, sector and experience to narrow results.
- Open each job and read the full description: employer name, location, salary information if given, required skills and last date.
- Apply only for roles that match your skills and that you would actually accept.
- Keep a simple record of applications in a notebook: date, employer, role, and any reply.
Before an interview, search the employer's name on the internet, and check the Blacklisted Entities list on NCS. A genuine employer will not ask you to pay for a job, training kit or "registration".
Following up after you apply
If a job listing gives an HR email or phone number, a short, polite follow-up a few days after applying can help. Keep it brief:
Subject: Application for Office Assistant – [Your Name]
Dear Sir/Madam,
I applied for the Office Assistant position through the National Career
Service portal on [date]. I have completed a computer course with MS
Excel and Tally, and I live in [town]. I would be glad to attend an
interview at your convenience. My resume is attached.
Regards,
[Your Name]
[Mobile number]
Follow up once or twice at most. If there is no reply, move on and keep applying elsewhere.
Job fairs: how to make the most of them
Job fairs bring many employers to one place on one day. They are especially useful for freshers because interviews often happen on the spot.
- Register for the fair on NCS in advance if the event allows it.
- Carry several printed copies of your resume, photocopies of certificates and your ID.
- Reach early — queues grow quickly.
- Prepare a 30-second introduction: name, qualification, skills, and the role you want.
- Note the names and phone numbers of the HR people you meet, and follow up politely.
For interview practice, see common interview questions after a skill course.
Career counselling and career centres
If you are unsure which job or course suits you, NCS lets you find a counsellor or a career centre near you. Model Career Centres in many districts run counselling sessions, workshops and job fairs. Ask about:
- Aptitude or interest guidance to pick a trade.
- Local job fairs and employer visits.
- Information about apprenticeships and skill courses.
- Help with your NCS profile.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | What to try |
|---|---|
| OTP not received | Check network signal and that DND is not blocking messages; wait a minute and request again; make sure the number is entered correctly. |
| "Mobile number already registered" | You (or someone using your number) may have registered before. Use the forgot password option instead of a new registration. |
| Forgot password | Use the forgot password link on the login page and reset through OTP. |
| Page not loading or session expired | Use an updated browser, clear cache, and avoid keeping the form open for too long without saving. |
| Name or date of birth entered wrongly | Look for an edit option in your profile; if a field is locked, contact the helpline 1514 or your nearest career centre. |
| No suitable jobs showing | Widen the location to nearby districts, try different keywords, and complete all profile sections. |
Stay safe from job fraud
- No genuine employer asks for money to give you a job or an interview.
- Do not share Aadhaar, bank details or OTPs over phone calls or chat with unknown "recruiters".
- Be careful with offers that promise very high pay for very little work, or overseas jobs without proper process.
- For overseas jobs, use only registered recruiting agents and the official e-Migrate system linked from NCS.
Our article on UPI fraud and cyber safety covers the common tricks used against job seekers.
After registration: a weekly routine
- Log in at least twice a week and search for new jobs in your district.
- Apply to every suitable job within a day or two of it appearing.
- Check upcoming job fairs once a week.
- Update your profile after every new skill or certificate.
- Keep your notebook of applications and follow up where you have contact details.
NCS is one tool among several. Combine it with private job sites, walk-in visits to local businesses and apprenticeships. Nipun India itself holds an NCS registration, but your job search should always be much wider than any one organisation or training provider.
