Resume for Freshers After a Skill Course (Free Template)

How to build a one-page resume when you have a certificate but no experience — sections, wording, projects, mistakes to avoid and a copy-ready template.

By Nipun India Academic Team Updated 13 min read
Key takeaways
  • Keep a fresher resume to one page and put your skill certification above school education.
  • Write skills as specific, testable tasks — "SUMIF and VLOOKUP in Excel", not just "MS Office".
  • Describe lab exercises as projects using action verb + output + tool + size.
  • Never include Aadhaar, PAN or bank details; add your certificate number and verification link instead.
  • Adjust the title, summary and skill order for each job advertisement.

When you have just finished a skill course and have never held a job, your resume has one task: prove in under a minute that you can already do the basic work. You do not need fancy design or big words. You need one clean page that shows the course you completed, the tools you can actually use, the practical work you did, and how to contact you.

This guide walks through each section of a fresher resume in the order employers read it, shows weak and strong wording side by side, and ends with a copy-ready template you can fill in tonight.

What an employer looks for in the first 30 seconds

A shop owner, office manager or HR assistant hiring for an entry-level post often has a pile of resumes and little time. They skim from top to bottom and stop when they find a reason to call you, or a reason not to. In that first pass they usually look for five things:

  1. Is the role clear? Your heading or summary should say what job you want, for example "Computer Operator" or "Accounts Assistant (Tally)".
  2. Is there a relevant skill? The course name and two or three specific tools should be visible without scrolling.
  3. Is it believable? Specific details (software version, typing speed you have tested, a project you finished) are more convincing than adjectives such as "hard-working".
  4. Is the candidate local or ready to travel? Your town or area matters for small employers.
  5. Can I contact them easily? A working mobile number and an email address you check daily.

Everything else in your resume should support these five points. If a line does not help, remove it.

The one-page structure, section by section

For a fresher, one page is enough. Two pages usually means repeated or unnecessary content. Use this order:

OrderSectionLengthPurpose
1Name and contact details3 linesWho you are and how to reach you
2Profile summary2–3 linesThe job you want and why you fit
3Skills4–8 bullet pointsTools and tasks you can do today
4Skill certification2–4 linesCourse name, duration, certificate number, how to verify
5Practical work / projects2–4 bullet pointsProof that you have used the skills
6Education2–3 linesHighest qualification first
7Experience (if any)2–4 linesInternship, apprenticeship, family business, part-time work
8Languages and personal details2–3 linesLanguages you can speak and write; only essential personal details

Notice that the skill certification comes before school education. After a skill course, the course is your strongest qualification for the job, so it should appear higher on the page.

Contact details: what to include and what to leave out

Write your full name in a slightly bigger font at the top. Below it, on one or two lines:

  • Mobile number you will actually answer, with WhatsApp if it is the same number
  • A simple email address, ideally based on your name (avoid nicknames and numbers like "cutegirl123")
  • Town and district, for example "Hanamkonda, Telangana" — a full house address is not needed
  • A LinkedIn profile link only if you have filled it in properly
Never put these on a resume

Do not write your Aadhaar number, PAN, bank account details or any password on a resume. Resumes are shared, printed and forwarded on WhatsApp groups. An employer who needs ID proof will ask for it at the joining stage, through a proper form.

Many Indian resumes list date of birth, father's name, religion, marital status and a photo. None of these are required for most private jobs. Include date of birth only if the job advertisement mentions an age limit, and add a photo only if the employer asks for one.

Writing a profile summary that is not generic

"Seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation" appears on thousands of resumes and tells the reader nothing. A better summary follows a simple formula:

[Course] certified [role] with practical skills in [two or three specific tools/tasks]. Looking for a [job title] position in [area/type of employer].

Examples for different courses:

  • DCA: DCA-certified computer operator with practical skills in MS Excel (SUMIF, VLOOKUP, sorting and filtering), MS Word letter formatting and typing at a tested 32 words per minute. Looking for a computer operator or data entry role in Warangal.
  • Tally With GST: Trained in TallyPrime with hands-on practice in sales and purchase vouchers, GST invoicing and bank reconciliation on sample company data. Looking for an accounts assistant position with a trading or distribution firm.
  • AutoCAD 2D & 3D: AutoCAD-trained drafter able to prepare dimensioned floor plans, layers and plotted layouts to scale. Looking for a junior draftsman role with a builder, architect or interior firm.
  • Self Employed Tailor / Sewing Machine Operator: Trained tailor skilled in body measurement, pattern cutting and blouse and salwar stitching on single-needle machines. Looking for a tailoring or production role in a boutique or garment unit.
  • Beautician: Certified beautician trained in facials, threading, waxing, manicure and party makeup, with strong focus on hygiene. Looking for a beautician position in a salon.
  • Digital Marketing: Digital marketing trainee with practical work in Google Business Profile setup, Instagram content planning and basic Google Ads campaigns. Looking for a social media or digital marketing executive role.

Only mention a number like typing speed if you have actually measured it on a typing test. Interviewers often check.

The skills section: specific beats vague

Write skills as tasks you can perform, not as single words. Compare these:

Weak (vague)Strong (specific and testable)
MS OfficeMS Word: letters, tables, mail merge; MS Excel: formulas (SUM, IF, COUNTIF, VLOOKUP), charts, filters
TallyTallyPrime: ledger creation, sales/purchase vouchers with GST, stock items, day book and GST reports
InternetEmail with attachments, Google Drive sharing, online form filling, scanning and PDF conversion
AutoCAD2D drafting with layers, dimensions and blocks; plotting to scale (1:100, 1:50); basic 3D solids
TailoringMeasurement taking, paper pattern making, blouse with princess cut, salwar kameez, alterations
Good communicationTelugu, Hindi and English (spoken); comfortable answering customer calls

Keep between four and eight skill lines. List the skills most relevant to the job you are applying for first. If you are applying to a billing counter, Tally comes before PowerPoint.

How to list your skill certificate

Write the certificate details so the employer can check them without calling you. A good format is:

Diploma in Computer Application (DCA) — 3 months
[Training center name], [Town] | Completed: [Month Year]
Certificate No.: [your number] | Verify at: nipunindia.com/verify

Use the exact course name printed on the certificate. Do not shorten "Tally With GST" to "Accounting Diploma" or upgrade "Certificate" to "Degree". Small differences between your resume and your certificate make employers suspicious.

If your certificate is issued by Nipun India through a partner training center, you can mention that it can be verified online at nipunindia.com/verify. Check it yourself before you send the resume, so you know the details show correctly. Our guide on using a skill certificate in job applications explains more ways to present it.

Turning lab practice into "projects"

Most freshers think they have nothing to put under projects. In fact, every practical exercise you completed in your course is a small project if you describe it properly. Use this pattern: action verb + what you made + tool + result or size.

  • Prepared a monthly sales register of 120 sample invoices in MS Excel with SUMIF summaries by customer and a bar chart.
  • Created a sample trading company in TallyPrime and recorded one month of purchase, sales, payment and receipt vouchers with GST.
  • Drew a dimensioned 2BHK floor plan on a 30 ft × 40 ft plot in AutoCAD with separate layers for walls, doors and furniture, plotted at 1:100.
  • Stitched 10 blouses and 4 salwar sets for family customers, including measurement, cutting and finishing.
  • Set up a Google Business Profile and a 30-day Instagram content calendar for a relative's sweet shop.

Keep the files (Excel sheets, Tally backups, drawing PDFs, photos of garments, screenshots of posts) in one folder on your phone. When an interviewer asks "Can you show me?", you can.

Education and experience when you have very little

Education

List your highest qualification first, with board or university, year of passing and, if it is reasonable, the percentage or grade. You do not need to list every class from primary school; Class 10 and Class 12 (or your degree) are enough.

Experience you may have forgotten

Formal jobs are not the only experience that counts. Consider:

  • Apprenticeship or internship, even a short one
  • Helping in a family shop with billing, stock or customer service
  • Part-time or seasonal work: tuition, festival sales, event support, delivery
  • Volunteer work at school, temple, church, mosque or community events where you handled registration, accounts or computers
  • Small paid orders you completed independently, such as stitching or makeup for weddings

Write each one with dates and two short bullet points about what you did. Be honest about the scale: "Helped in family kirana shop — handled billing on weekends" is fine and believable.

Copy-ready one-page resume template

The template below uses a fictional sample person. Every name, number and detail in it is made up for illustration. Replace all of it with your own true details. Do not copy the sample skills unless you actually have them.

Sample only

"Asha Sample" is not a real person or student. The phone number, email and certificate number are placeholders and will not work.

Formatting rules that keep it readable

ItemRecommended
FontCalibri, Arial or Cambria; 10.5–11.5 pt body, 16–18 pt name
Margins1.5–2 cm on all sides
HeadingsBold capitals; one style for all headings
ColoursBlack text; at most one dark accent colour
Tables and text boxesAvoid them — online job portals often read them badly
File typePDF, unless the employer asks for Word
File nameFirstname_Lastname_Resume.pdf, not resume final new (2).pdf

Print one copy and read it on paper. Spelling mistakes are easier to spot on paper than on a phone screen. Ask a teacher or friend to check it as well. If you want to improve your Word skills for this, see our MS Word professional documents guide.

Tailoring the resume for each job in 10 minutes

Sending the same resume everywhere works poorly. Small changes for each application make a big difference:

  1. Read the job advertisement and underline the skills and tasks it mentions.
  2. Change the job title under your name to match the advertised post.
  3. Edit one line of the profile summary to mention the type of employer (school, hospital, distributor, salon).
  4. Move the most relevant skills to the top of the skills list.
  5. Add the advertisement's own words where they are true for you — if it says "billing", use "billing", not only "invoicing".
  6. Save with a new file name and keep a list of where you applied and on what date.

When sending by email, write a short covering message in the body instead of leaving it empty. Our professional email writing guide has templates for job applications.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Spelling mistakes in your own name, email or the company name
  • Claiming skills you have not practised, like "Advanced Excel" after learning only SUM
  • Copying a friend's resume with the same projects and wording
  • Listing hobbies such as "watching movies" and "listening to music" that add nothing
  • Using a photo of the resume instead of a proper PDF
  • An email ID or WhatsApp display picture that looks unprofessional
  • A phone number that is often switched off or has a full voicemail
  • Different course names or dates on the resume and the certificate

Final check before you send

  • Fits on one page with no squeezed text
  • Job title matches the post you are applying for
  • Certificate number is correct and verifies online
  • Every skill listed is one you could demonstrate in an interview today
  • Phone and email tested; you are ready to answer unknown numbers politely
  • Saved as PDF with a clear file name
  • You have prepared to talk about each line — see our interview questions with sample answers

Frequently asked questions

What should a fresher write in a resume with no experience?
Focus on your skill course, the specific tools you can use, and practical work done during training. Family business help, internships, apprenticeships and volunteer work also count as experience if you describe them honestly.
Should a fresher resume be one page or two?
One page is enough for almost every fresher. If your resume runs to two pages, remove generic lines, long hobby lists and repeated information.
Is a photo required on a resume in India?
Most private employers do not require a photo. Add one only if the job advertisement asks for it, and use a plain, recent passport-style photo.
How do I mention a skill certificate on my resume?
Write the exact course name, duration, training center, month of completion and certificate number, plus the website where it can be verified. Check that it verifies correctly before you send the resume.
Should I send my resume as Word or PDF?
Send a PDF unless the employer asks for Word. A PDF keeps your formatting the same on every phone and computer.
