Stage 3 · Tally deep dive

Trading shops and distributors run Tally for billing and stock. GST made digital books normal. Tally converts to jobs when you practice real vouchers — not slides alone.
Practice voucher set (ask your trainer)
Large companies may use ERP systems, but lakhs of small and medium businesses rely on Tally because it is affordable, familiar to local accountants and sufficient for billing, inventory and GST reports. When a shop owner says “accounts person kavali,” they often mean: someone who can enter purchases and sales correctly, match bank entries and help the CA at quarter-end.
That is your entry point — not signing audit reports, but keeping the books clean daily.
| Topic | Practical outcome |
|---|---|
| Company creation & ledgers | Set up a firm from scratch |
| Sales & purchase vouchers | Daily billing entries |
| Inventory & godowns | Stock reports traders need |
| GST configuration | Tax rates, HSN, returns support |
| Bank reconciliation | Match passbook vs books |
| Backup & security | Data safety employers trust |
If GST is missing from the syllabus, ask why — unless you target only non-GST niche clients (rare for new entrants).
Morning: enter yesterday’s purchase bills and cheques. Mid-day: generate sales invoices, answer “stock ela undi?” queries via inventory report. Evening: bank reconciliation or GST document collection for the consultant. It is repetitive but teaches discipline — accuracy matters more than speed at first.
Owners often ask practical questions, not textbook definitions:
Practice on a demo company until answers are muscle memory. Bring certificate verification details and one training project printout.
Entry accounts assistant (Tally + GST, tier-2 town): often roughly ₹10,000 – ₹18,000/month. With 2–3 years and payroll or advanced GST experience, many move to ₹18,000 – ₹25,000+ depending on firm size.
Growth paths: payroll specialist, inventory controller, single-firm lead accountant, or parallel B.Com while working.
Distributors — high volume invoices, stock rotation, credit parties. Retail shops — simpler billing but owner watches daily cash. Service firms — GST on services, less inventory. Training on one type in class helps; first job may teach another — stay flexible.
Expect longer hours when owners close books or when CA firms request data. This is where reliable juniors earn trust — not by being fastest on day three, but by not hiding mistakes on day thirty. If you entered a wrong purchase bill, report it early; owners forgive honesty faster than silent errors.
Before interviews, you should have entered — in a demo company — at least:
If your training ended without doing the above hands-on, keep practicing on demo data until you can explain each voucher type without looking at notes.
Tally qualifies you for accounts assistant and billing roles in SMEs. Full accountant or independent CA work needs higher qualifications and experience.
For most Indian trading and service firms, yes. GST vouchers, returns support and reconciliation are daily tasks.
Employers increasingly use Tally Prime. Ensure your training covers the version firms in your area actually run.
