- A Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra is a model skill training centre run by a training partner, not a government office or government college.
- PMKVY is the scheme that funds training; a PMKK is one type of centre where training happens; the Sector Skill Council assesses you.
- Find and confirm centres on the Skill India Digital Hub โ a board or a map listing alone is not proof of an approved batch.
- In a PMKVY batch, training, assessment and certification are meant to be free; any fee needs a written reason and a printed receipt.
A board reading "Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra" outside a building makes many students assume it is a government office or a government college. It is neither. A PMKK is a skill training centre โ usually run by a private training partner โ that was set up under a government initiative to a defined standard. Knowing that difference helps you use a PMKK well: to find genuine scheme batches, check what is free and what is not, and verify your certificate.
This guide explains what a PMKK is, how it relates to PMKVY and NSDC, what a well-run centre should have, how to find one near you, and the questions to ask on your first visit.
Nipun India is a private company. It does not run a PMKK and is not a partner or implementing agency of PMKVY, PMKK or NSDC. Use the official portals linked on this page to search for centres and enrol, and confirm current rules there.
What a Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra is
Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendras were introduced by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) as the implementing body, in the years after the Skill India Mission and PMKVY began in 2015. The idea was to create model training centres across districts โ centres with standard branding, proper classrooms and labs, and a focus on industry-relevant job roles โ so that skill training would not depend on small, poorly equipped rooms.
The important points for a student:
- A PMKK is operated by a training partner, which is normally a private organisation selected for the purpose.
- It runs government-funded scheme batches (for example under PMKVY) when such batches are allotted to it, and may also run fee-paid courses.
- Its trainees are assessed independently through the Sector Skill Council system for the job role, like at any accredited centre.
- The PMKK name and branding do not make it a government institute, and the staff are not government employees.
The number of PMKKs, which ones are active, and which schemes they currently run have changed across PMKVY phases. A board on a building is not proof that a centre is running an approved batch today. Always check the current listing on the Skill India Digital Hub.
PMKK, PMKVY and NSDC: how they connect
| Name | What it is | Simple way to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Skill India Mission | The national skilling mission launched in 2015 | The umbrella |
| MSDE | The ministry in charge of skill development | The policy maker |
| NSDC | Public-private partnership that implements PMKVY with training partners | The network builder |
| PMKVY | The flagship scheme that funds short-term training, RPL and special projects | The scheme (what pays for training) |
| PMKK | A model training centre run by a training partner | The building where training happens |
| Sector Skill Council | Industry body that defines job roles and arranges assessment | The examiner |
So the scheme (PMKVY) pays, the centre (PMKK or another accredited centre) teaches, and the Sector Skill Council assesses. Our NSDC guide explains the training partner and assessment system in more depth, and the PMKVY guide covers the scheme itself.
What a well-run PMKK should have
PMKKs were meant to show what a good training centre looks like. Whether you are at a PMKK or any other centre, use this as a quality checklist on your visit:
- Clear signage showing the training partner's name, not just the scheme logo.
- Job-role-specific labs โ working sewing machines for apparel roles, computers for IT roles, beauty stations for beauty and wellness roles, tools for electrical or automotive roles.
- Enough equipment for every trainee to practise during practical sessions, not just watch.
- A biometric attendance system. NSDC's PMKVY page states that attendance under PMKVY 4.0 is recorded through the Aadhaar Enabled Biometric Attendance System (AEBAS).
- Trainer details โ trainers should be certified for the job role. You may ask about their qualifications.
- Separate washrooms for women and men, drinking water, and basic safety measures such as fire extinguishers and first aid.
- A visible complaint mechanism โ a register, a helpline poster or contact details of the state skill mission.
- Accessibility for trainees with disabilities, at least a ramp and an accessible ground-floor classroom.
How to find a PMKK or an approved centre near you
There is no reason to rely on a mobiliser or a WhatsApp forward to find a centre. Use official channels.
- Create your learner profile on the Skill India Digital Hub (skillindiadigital.gov.in) with your own mobile number. See our SIDH guide.
- Search for training centres by state and district, and filter by the sector or job role you want.
- Note the centre's name and training partner exactly as listed. The board outside should match.
- Ask your district skill office or State Skill Development Mission which centres in your district currently have scheme batches. District employment exchanges and the National Career Service can also guide you.
- Visit in person before enrolling, with a parent or friend if possible.
Online map searches for "PMKK near me" show whatever businesses label themselves that way. Some listings are old, some are coaching institutes using the name loosely. Treat a map result as a lead, then confirm it on the official portal.
Questions to ask on your first visit
Write the answers down, with the name of the person who answered and the date.
| Question | A good answer looks like |
|---|---|
| Which training partner runs this centre? | A specific organisation name that matches the official listing |
| Is my batch under PMKVY or another scheme, or is it fee-paid? | A clear answer, with the scheme name; fee-paid courses come with a fee structure and receipt |
| What is the exact job role name and Sector Skill Council? | An official job role title (for example, "Sewing Machine Operator") and the SSC name |
| How many hours of training, and how much is practical? | A schedule showing practical sessions and any on-the-job training |
| Will my enrolment appear in my own SIDH profile? | Yes, before training begins |
| Who conducts the assessment and when? | An approved assessment agency, around the end of training |
| How do I verify the certificate? | Through SIDH, a QR code or DigiLocker |
| What placement or apprenticeship support do you give? | Names of employers or apprenticeship links you can check โ not a "100% job guarantee" |
If the staff hesitate on more than one of these questions, visit another centre before deciding. A good centre is usually glad to show you its lab, its listing on the portal and a sample certificate, because those are the things that set it apart from a poorly run one.
What is free and what is not
NSDC's PMKVY page lists, for PMKVY 4.0, free skill training, free assessment and certification, and a free uniform and induction kit for candidates, along with accident insurance during training and additional support for some groups. These apply to PMKVY scheme batches for eligible candidates โ not to every course run in the same building.
| Situation | Should you pay? |
|---|---|
| Enrolled in a PMKVY batch, shown in your SIDH profile | Training, assessment and certification are meant to be free. Do not pay a "registration" or "admission" fee. |
| Joining a fee-paid course at the same centre | Yes, but only against a printed receipt and a written fee structure. |
| Asked to pay to "speed up" your certificate | No. Certificates follow assessment results, not payments. |
| Asked to pay a refundable deposit | Ask for the rule in writing and a receipt. If it is a scheme batch, check with the state skill mission. |
If you already have skills: Recognition of Prior Learning
Not everyone who walks into a skill centre needs a full course. A tailor who has stitched blouses for years, a self-taught electrician or a beauty parlour helper may already have most of the skills of a job role but no certificate. Under PMKVY, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) exists for exactly this. NSDC's PMKVY page describes RPL as certifying skills gained through informal learning or work experience, after due assessment, with the option of further coursework to reach a higher level.
If this describes you, ask the centre:
- Is an RPL batch available for my job role at this centre or nearby?
- How long is the orientation before the assessment?
- What will the practical assessment involve, and can I practise on the centre's equipment beforehand?
- Will my RPL certificate appear in my SIDH profile and DigiLocker?
RPL is useful because it turns years of work into a verifiable certificate that employers, contractors and customers can check โ without leaving your job for a full course.
PMKK compared with other places to learn a skill
| PMKK | Other accredited training centre | ITI | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Run by | A training partner under the PMKK initiative | A training partner | State government or private (affiliated) |
| Course type | Short-term job-role courses | Short-term job-role courses | Longer trade courses under DGT standards |
| Assessment | Through the Sector Skill Council | Through the Sector Skill Council | Trade tests under DGT |
| Infrastructure | Built to a model standard | Varies by centre | Workshops for each trade |
| Best for | Quick job-role training with good facilities | Quick job-role training close to home | Deeper trade foundation for industry careers |
A PMKK is not automatically better than a smaller accredited centre. What matters is whether your batch is approved, the lab has working equipment, the trainer knows the job, and the assessment is genuine. For the full picture of routes, read Skill India Mission explained.
Red flags at any centre using the PMKK name
- The centre cannot be found on the Skill India Digital Hub, or the name and address do not match.
- Staff promise a certificate without attendance or assessment.
- Staff promise a government job.
- Your registration uses someone else's mobile number or email.
- Original documents (Aadhaar card, mark sheets, bank passbook) are kept by the centre.
- You are asked to sign blank forms or attendance sheets for days you did not attend.
- Fees are collected for a batch described as free, without a receipt.
If you see these, do not enrol. If you are already enrolled, collect copies of everything โ messages, receipts, photos โ and raise a complaint through the grievance option on the official portal or with your State Skill Development Mission. Our parent's guide to choosing a training centre has more on handling problems.
Making the most of your time at a PMKK
- Get the job role's Qualification Pack or syllabus on the first day, and tick off each task as you learn it.
- Use the lab outside class time if the centre allows it. Practical speed and accuracy decide most assessments.
- Take the employability sessions seriously โ communication, workplace safety, digital basics. Employers notice these.
- Keep a skills record: photos of work you made, a list of tools and software you used. It helps in interviews.
- After certification, download the certificate, check it in DigiLocker, and add it to your resume. See how to verify a skill certificate.
