- Put a Certifications section near the top of a fresher resume with the exact course name, issuer, duration, date and certificate number.
- Turn course topics into "can do" skill lines that match the job.
- Verify your own certificate online before applying, and give employers the number so they can check it quickly.
- Never describe a certificate as government-approved or recognised unless it truly is and you can prove it.
- Prepare to explain your course and to do a short practical test in the interview.
A skill certificate is proof that you completed training and passed an assessment. But a certificate sitting in a folder does nothing. How you present it โ on your resume, in online forms, on LinkedIn and in the interview โ decides whether an employer notices it, trusts it and connects it to the job. This guide shows exactly where and how to mention your certificate, how employers check it, and how to talk about it so it supports you instead of being just another line.
What employers look for in a certificate
When a recruiter sees a skill certificate on a resume, they usually ask themselves four quick questions:
- Is it relevant? Does this skill match the job? A Tally certificate matters for an accounts role; it matters less for a sales job.
- Is it real? Can the certificate be checked with the issuer?
- What can this person actually do? The certificate name alone does not say whether you can make a GST invoice or a salary sheet.
- Is it recent? A course completed recently suggests the skills are fresh.
Your job is to answer all four questions before the employer has to ask.
How to list a certificate on your resume
Where to put it
For freshers, put a section called Certifications or Skill Training near the top โ right after your career objective or summary, and before or just after education. If the certificate is the main reason you are qualified for the job, it deserves a prominent place.
What to include
| Detail | Example | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Exact course name | Tally With GST | Write it exactly as printed on the certificate |
| Issuing organisation | Name of the organisation that issued the certificate | Tells the employer who to verify with |
| Training center and town | Name of the center, town | Useful for local employers |
| Duration and completion date | 3 months, completed August 2026 | Shows the depth and how recent it is |
| Grade or result (if good) | First Division | Optional; include if it helps |
| Certificate number / verification link | Certificate No. and the issuer's verification page | Lets the employer verify in seconds |
| Key skills learned | 2โ4 short bullet points | Connects the certificate to real tasks |
A sample resume entry
CERTIFICATIONS
Diploma in Computer Applications (DCA) โ 3 months
Issued by: [Issuing organisation] | Center: [Center name], Karimnagar
Completed: August 2026 | Result: First Division
Certificate No.: [number] โ verifiable at [issuer's verification page]
โข Prepared formatted letters, tables and reports in MS Word
โข Built Excel sheets with SUM, IF, COUNTIF and VLOOKUP formulas
โข Typing speed: 30 words per minute (English)
โข Managed email, file folders and PDF documents
Replace everything in square brackets with your real details. Only list skills you can demonstrate in a test โ interviewers often check. For the full layout of a fresher resume, see our resume guide for freshers.
Do not write "government certificate", "government approved" or "recognised by [any body]" unless the certificate actually states it and you can show proof. Describe it exactly as it is. Employers who discover an exaggeration may reject the application or withdraw an offer. Our guide to registered, recognised and accredited certificates explains the differences.
Turn certificate topics into skill bullets
Employers hire for tasks, not course titles. Translate what you learned into what you can do:
| Course topic | Weak resume line | Strong resume line |
|---|---|---|
| Tally GST | Knowledge of Tally | Recorded sales and purchase vouchers with GST and generated GST reports in Tally |
| Excel | MS Excel | Created salary and stock sheets using SUMIF, VLOOKUP and percentage formulas |
| AutoCAD | AutoCAD basics | Drew 2D floor plans with dimensions, layers and title blocks in AutoCAD |
| Digital marketing | Social media knowledge | Planned a two-week social media post calendar and tracked basic results for a practice business page |
| Tailoring | Tailoring course | Took measurements and stitched blouses, salwar suits and alterations to customer fit |
| Beautician | Beauty course | Performed clean-ups, threading and basic hair styling following hygiene and patch-test practice |
Online job portals and application forms
Most job portals and government employment portals have a section for certifications or training. Fill it in fully:
- Enter the course name exactly as on the certificate.
- Choose the closest category if a drop-down list is used, and add the exact name in the description.
- Add the completion month and year.
- Add your key skills separately in the "Skills" field (for example "Tally", "GST", "MS Excel") โ recruiters often search by these keywords.
- Upload a clear PDF scan of the certificate if the portal allows, named properly (for example
RaviKumar_Tally_Certificate_2026.pdf). - Keep your profile updated; an incomplete profile may not appear in searches.
Register on the government's National Career Service portal and add your skill training there too. If you are interested in apprenticeships, mention the certificate in your profile on the apprenticeship portal โ see our NAPS guide.
LinkedIn and professional profiles
LinkedIn is used more for office, IT, design and marketing roles. If you create a profile:
- Add the certificate under Licenses & certifications with the course name, issuing organisation, issue date and certificate number.
- If the issuer has a verification link, add it in the credential URL field.
- Add the related skills in the Skills section.
- Write a short headline such as "DCA-certified office assistant | MS Excel | Typing 30 WPM".
- Use a clear, professional photo and keep the profile honest โ employers compare it with your resume.
Sending your certificate by email or WhatsApp
Many small employers ask candidates to "send your documents on WhatsApp". Do it professionally:
- Send PDF files, not blurred photos. Use your phone's document scanner.
- Name the files clearly so they make sense when forwarded.
- Add a short polite message:
"Good afternoon, sir/madam. As discussed, I am sending my resume and my Tally With GST certificate for the accounts assistant position. The certificate number is [number], and it can be checked online at [issuer's verification page]. Thank you. โ Ravi Kumar, 98xxxxxxxx"
Send documents only to employers you have verified โ never to unknown "recruiters" who contacted you out of the blue. Read our cyber safety guide on fake job offers.
A sample email application
When you apply by email, keep the message short and put the certificate in context:
Subject: Application for Accounts Assistant โ Ravi Kumar
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am applying for the Accounts Assistant position advertised on
[portal/newspaper] on [date].
I recently completed a three-month Tally With GST course, where I
recorded sales and purchase vouchers with GST, maintained ledgers and
prepared trial balance and GST reports for a practice company.
My certificate number is [number]; it can be verified at
[issuer's verification page].
I have attached my resume and certificate as PDF files. I would be
glad to take a practical test at your convenience.
Thank you for your time.
Regards,
Ravi Kumar
98xxxxxxxx
Offering to take a practical test shows confidence in your skill. For more on writing emails, see our professional email guide.
How employers verify certificates โ and how to make it easy
Careful employers check certificates, especially for roles involving money or records. They may:
- Ask to see the original certificate during the interview.
- Check the certificate number on the issuer's online verification page.
- Call the training center or issuer.
- Give you a short practical test on the same skills.
Make it easy for them. Before applying, check your own certificate number online so you know it works and the details are correct. For example, Nipun India certificates can be checked by number at nipunindia.com/verify, and the result shows the student's name, course, training center and marks. Our guide on how to verify a skill certificate explains the steps that employers follow.
Putting the certificate number and verification page on your resume signals confidence. It saves the employer time and sets you apart from candidates who only attach a photo.
Talking about your certificate in an interview
Interviewers rarely ask "Do you have a certificate?" They ask what you learned and what you can do. Prepare answers to these questions:
"Tell me about your course."
"I completed a three-month Tally With GST course in August. It covered company creation, ledgers, sales and purchase vouchers with GST, and reports like the trial balance and GST summary. In the practical exam I recorded a month of transactions for a sample trading company. I practise entries regularly so I stay quick."
"What was the most difficult part, and how did you handle it?"
Choose a real example: "At first my trial balance often did not match. I learned to check the ledger groups and amounts in the last few entries first. Now I can usually find the error quickly."
"Can you show me?"
Be ready for a short practical test. Practise the core tasks of your course until you can do them without notes. Carry a printed portfolio of two or three pieces of work if possible. Our interview questions guide has more sample questions and answers.
If you have several certificates
- List the most relevant certificate for each job first, not the most recent.
- Leave out certificates that have nothing to do with the job, or group them in one line under "Other training".
- Do not list very short online certificates as if they were full courses. Write the actual duration.
- Quality matters more than quantity โ one certificate you can back up in a practical test is worth more than many you cannot.
Finally, keep learning after the certificate. Employers are impressed when a candidate says, "Since finishing the course, I have also practised GST returns" or "I have improved my typing speed further." It shows the certificate was a starting point, not the end.
Before you apply: final checklist
- Name on certificate matches your ID and resume exactly
- Certificate verified online by you, details correct
- Certifications section near the top of the resume
- Course name, issuer, duration, date and certificate number included
- Three or four skill bullets in "can do" language
- Clear PDF scan, sensibly named
- Portal profiles updated with the certificate and skills
- Answers prepared for "Tell me about your course" and a practical test
- No exaggerated claims about recognition or approval
