- Touch typing with all ten fingers, eyes on the screen, is the only reliable path past 25β30 WPM.
- One word = 5 keystrokes, so 1 WPM = 300 KDPH; 35 WPM equals 10,500 key depressions per hour.
- Practise 30β40 minutes daily; never move on while accuracy is below 95%.
- Add Indian numbers, amounts, names and addresses to practice β that is what real office tests contain.
- Read the official notification before a government typing test; rules and layouts vary.
If you type with two fingers while looking at the keyboard, you will probably stay stuck around 15β25 words per minute no matter how much you practise. Touch typing β using all ten fingers without looking β is the only reliable way to reach 35β40 WPM and beyond. This plan takes about 30β40 minutes a day for 30 days.
It is written for students preparing for data entry jobs, office assistant interviews and government typing tests. You need a computer with a physical keyboard. Mobile phone typing does not transfer to a keyboard.
How typing speed is measured
Before you practise, understand the numbers you are chasing, because different employers measure speed differently.
| Term | Meaning | Formula |
|---|---|---|
| Word | Standard "word" for speed tests | 5 keystrokes, including spaces and punctuation |
| Gross WPM | Raw speed, ignoring mistakes | (Total keystrokes Γ· 5) Γ· minutes |
| Net WPM | Speed after penalty for errors | Gross WPM β (uncorrected errors Γ· minutes) |
| Accuracy | Share of words typed correctly | (Correct words Γ· total words) Γ 100 |
| KDPH | Key depressions per hour, used in many data entry tests | Keystrokes per minute Γ 60 |
Worked example
In a 10-minute test you type 2,250 keystrokes and leave 18 words wrong.
- Words typed = 2,250 Γ· 5 = 450 words.
- Gross speed = 450 Γ· 10 = 45 WPM.
- Net speed = 45 β (18 Γ· 10) = 45 β 1.8 = 43.2 WPM.
- Accuracy = (450 β 18) Γ· 450 Γ 100 = 432 Γ· 450 Γ 100 = 96%.
- Keystrokes per minute = 2,250 Γ· 10 = 225, so KDPH = 225 Γ 60 = 13,500.
Converting between WPM and KDPH
Because one word is five keystrokes, 1 WPM = 300 KDPH (5 Γ 60). So 35 WPM = 10,500 KDPH, and 8,000 KDPH β 26.7 WPM. Remember this when a job advert says "8,000 key depressions per hour" β it is a speed you can reach within this plan.
Recent SSC Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL) notifications described a typing test of 35 WPM in English or 30 WPM in Hindi for clerical posts (10,500 and 9,000 key depressions per hour), and a data entry skill test of 8,000 key depressions per hour for data entry operator posts. Rules, durations and error limits change between notifications and between recruiting bodies, so always read the current notification on ssc.gov.in or the relevant state commission's site.
Measure your starting point today
- Open any free online typing test that shows WPM and accuracy (for example typing.com, keybr.com or a typing tutor installed at your training centre).
- Take three 1-minute tests and one 5-minute test. Do not look for perfection; type normally.
- Write down: gross WPM, accuracy, and whether you looked at the keyboard.
- Note which keys you hunt for. Most beginners struggle with B, Y, Q, Z, numbers and Shift.
Keep a simple log in a notebook or Excel sheet with columns: Day, Minutes practised, WPM, Accuracy %, Weak keys. Seeing the line rise keeps you going in week 2, when progress feels slow.
Posture and hand position
Bad posture causes wrist pain within weeks of full-day data entry work. Fix it before building speed.
- Sit with your back against the chair and feet flat on the floor.
- Elbows at roughly a right angle, close to your body.
- Wrists straight and floating slightly β do not rest the heels of your palms on the desk while typing.
- The screen at arm's length, top edge at or slightly below eye level.
- Keyboard directly in front of you, with the letters G and H in line with your nose.
- Look at the screen or the source paper, never at your hands.
Home row and finger assignments
Rest your left fingers on A S D F and right fingers on J K L ;. Feel for the small raised bumps on F and J β they let you find the home row without looking. Both thumbs rest on the Spacebar.
| Finger | Left hand keys | Right hand keys |
|---|---|---|
| Index | F, G, R, T, V, B, 4, 5 | J, H, U, Y, M, N, 6, 7 |
| Middle | D, E, C, 3 | K, I, comma, 8 |
| Ring | S, W, X, 2 | L, O, full stop, 9 |
| Little | A, Q, Z, 1, Tab, Caps Lock, left Shift | ; P / 0 - = [ ] ' Enter, right Shift, Backspace |
| Thumbs | Spacebar (use whichever thumb feels natural, but always the same one) | |
The Shift rule
Use the Shift key on the opposite hand. For a capital R (left hand), hold right Shift with your right little finger. For a capital J (right hand), hold left Shift. This keeps both hands in position and avoids twisting.
The 30-day plan
Practise every day, ideally at the same time. Short daily sessions work better than one long session per week, because the skill is muscle memory.
| Days | Focus | Daily routine (30β40 min) | Target by end |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1β3 | Home row only | Drills of asdf jkl; and words like "sad", "lad", "flask", "dash". Eyes on screen. | Type home row words without looking |
| 4β7 | Top row (QWERTYβ¦) | Add E, I, R, U first, then T, Y, W, O, Q, P. Return fingers to home row after every key. | All letters on two rows, 95% accuracy |
| 8β10 | Bottom row | C, V, B, N, M, comma, full stop, then X and Z. | Whole alphabet without looking |
| 11β14 | Real words and Shift | Common English words, sentences with capitals and full stops. Never look down β accept slowness. | 15β20 WPM, 95% accuracy |
| 15β18 | Numbers and symbols | Number row, then βΉ amounts, dates, phone numbers, PIN codes. Practise the numeric keypad with right hand on 4-5-6. | Type "βΉ12,450.50 on 03-04-2026" smoothly |
| 19β23 | Accuracy under time | Two 5-minute tests daily plus drills on your three weakest keys from the log. | 22β28 WPM, 96%+ accuracy |
| 24β27 | Speed bursts | 1-minute sprints at slightly faster than comfortable, followed by a 5-minute test at normal pace. | 28β35 WPM |
| 28β30 | Test simulation | Full 10-minute tests copying from printed paragraphs, the way exams and offices test you. | 30β40 WPM, 97%+ accuracy |
These targets are typical for someone starting from zero touch-typing ability and practising daily. Some people move faster, some slower. Accuracy targets matter more than speed targets: never move to the next stage while accuracy is below 95%.
A sample 35-minute session (from week 3)
| Minutes | Activity | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| 0β3 | Home row warm-up: "asdf jkl;" and "fjfj dkdk" slowly | Settle finger positions |
| 3β10 | Drills on your three weakest keys from the log | Fix the keys that slow you most |
| 10β18 | Lessons or word lists at a steady, even rhythm | Build muscle memory |
| 18β23 | Numbers, amounts and dates | Office-style data |
| 23β33 | One timed test (5 or 10 minutes) copying from paper | Measure real progress |
| 33β35 | Write WPM, accuracy and weak keys in the log | Track and plan tomorrow |
If you were a fast two-finger typist, your speed will drop when you switch to ten fingers. This is normal and temporary. People who give up here and go back to looking at the keyboard stay at their old speed permanently.
Practice passages for Indian office work
Typing tutors use random English text. Office work involves names, numbers and addresses. Add these to your daily routine from day 15:
Received Rs. 18,880 from Lakshmi Traders, Karimnagar, against Invoice No. INV-2026/045 dated 12-04-2026 by NEFT (UTR SBIN0000012345).
Name: K. Srinivas Rao | Father's Name: K. Venkat Rao | DOB: 14/08/2004 | Mobile: 98480 00000 | PIN: 500032
The meeting of the purchase committee will be held on Monday, 20 October 2026 at 11:00 a.m. in Conference Hall 2. All members are requested to attend.
Copy from a printed sheet placed beside the monitor, not from the screen. Most tests and real jobs work this way, and moving your eyes between paper and screen is a separate skill.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Keep looking at the keyboard | Habit and fear of mistakes | Cover your hands with a light cloth or a box for 10 minutes a day |
| Fingers drift off the home row | Not returning after each key | Slow down; feel F and J bumps before each word |
| Swapped letters ("teh") | One hand faster than the other | Type at an even rhythm, like a metronome, rather than in bursts |
| Too many Backspaces | Correcting every slip immediately | In practice, keep going; in exams, read the rules β some tests disable or penalise Backspace |
| Speed stuck for a week | Practising only easy text | Drill weak keys, numbers and punctuation for 10 minutes a session |
| Wrist or shoulder pain | Posture, resting wrists, long sessions | Adjust chair height; take a 2-minute break every 25β30 minutes |
Hindi and regional language typing
Some government tests offer Hindi typing. Windows includes an Inscript keyboard layout for Hindi and many Indian languages (add it under Settings β Time & language β Language). Inscript is the layout typically expected in central government Hindi typing tests, but some state tests and private offices use other layouts such as Remington or phonetic input. Check the test notice before you train, because switching layouts later means relearning finger positions. Practise English touch typing first; the habits of posture and not looking transfer to any layout.
How typing is tested in job interviews
- Data entry roles: usually a 5β15 minute test copying a form, table or paragraph. Accuracy is often weighted more than speed, and some employers reject candidates above a small error limit regardless of speed.
- Office assistants and receptionists: often a short letter typed in MS Word, judged on speed, spelling and formatting together.
- Accounts roles: number typing β amounts, dates and invoice numbers β often on the numeric keypad.
- Government posts: a qualifying skill test with fixed rules described in the notification, often on unfamiliar software with no spell check.
When you mention typing speed on your resume, write the figure from a timed test with accuracy, for example "Typing: 38 WPM, 97% accuracy (English)". Never inflate it β interviewers check on the spot. See the data entry operator guide for the full test format and interview questions.
Keeping your speed after the 30 days
- Do one 5-minute test three times a week and log the result.
- Type your daily notes, emails and assignments on a keyboard, not on a phone.
- Learn shortcuts (Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V, Ctrl+Z, Alt+Tab) so your hands stay on the keyboard.
- Once you pass 40 WPM, aim for 99% accuracy rather than higher speed β that is what makes a reliable office worker.
Typing practice is part of the computer fundamentals module in most DCA courses, including those run at Nipun India's partner centers, where lab time helps if you do not have a computer at home.
